Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do 12/08/10

We had a look at the 1966 Jun Fan Gung Fu - Jeet Kune Do trapping progression.

We started with referance point positions, then how to use the Pak Da by capturing (3 ways).

We then look at some basic options off of the rear hand:

Bong Sao, Lop Sut, Gum Da
Lop Sao Gwa Choi
Loi Pak Da
Chung Choi to Loi Pak Da

remember if there is nothing to trap don't go looking for trapping. If you do its a good way to lose your teeth!

Trapping is a very effective skill to have remember points of contact & speed are essential.

Guro Rick Faye has told me many times that there are six basic reasons for trapping

1) Create an opening for hit
2) To use major tools (elbows & knees etc)
3) Use the oppoent force against them
4) To give advantage to the trained martial artist
5) Limit you oppoents offense
6) You'll end up there anyway

remember when all else fails keep it simple and make sure you work the basic skills in all areas.

Then the rest is all gravy!

Panantukan 12/08/10

Last night we worked the following drills

Salute (double cover) with female triangle footwork, remember lads don't step with the wrong foot or you'll give up your back.

Cover & hit drill basic - remember the we discussed how important the intial hit is and forward momentum, we then added secoh (elbow) to scoop and uppercut. This drill we worked off of both hooks in a flow drill.

Lastly we did a inside sumgab (finger jab) that fails and then disolved the pressure using a arm roll & added three basic traps.

We then took the above drills/concepts and worked them on the pads combining basic strikes & counters.

REMEMBER PANANTUKAN IS A BOXING ART SO SHADOW BOXING IS A MUST!!!

As Guro David Onuma has proved many times in sparring if you have good footwork & solid boxing skills then Panantukan is highly effective, don't get obsessed with having to many techniques secure the basics first!

Guro Rick Faye also says when your technique fails make sure you can knock em out!

Well done lads!

Muay Thai 12/08/10

We worked the following in Thursday's Muay Thai

Each basic four count for 3 minutes in a glove drill format

LK - RC - LH - LK
LK - RC - LH - RK
RK - LH - RC - RK
RK - LH - RC - LK

(using crush/cover on the kicks & parry/cover on the cross & hook)

We then looked at countering the cross 2 ways with the left & right cut kick. from the left hook we worked a basic cover into HCH or CHC & shield/right kick all of this we put into a glove drill

Lastly we did parry/cover & split entry to get into knee & elbow range.

Kali Class - 10/08/10

we worked on the following areas of Kali from Guro David Onuma's CFS cirriculum.

Largo Mano (Long range) striking using a padded stick focusing on striking the arm we used two of the cinco terros patterns (1&2) using the following concepts.

1) Meet the force
2) Follow the force

We then did a 3 count Sumbrada pattern with & to finish we took the 3 points of reference from the Sumbrada pattern and worked the following disarms

1) Snake disarm
2) Vine disarm
3) Ejection

Next time lads we will put the disarms into the Sumbrada.

Well done all!

MMA (MKG) Class

We worked some pummelling drills with and without lead switching, from this drill we added the double leg arm weave takedown to single knee mount & looked at some basic striking.

Then we moved to full mount making sure we controlled the arms and look at openings to work ground & pound.

We then worked the following drill

Takedown, knee mount, full mount, turn over to guard, break guard, stand up & repeat.

Cheers lads. G

Monday (Panantukan class)

We looked at using good body mechanics when we strike & making sure the punch starts at the feet and working on correct power line all the way through until delivery to the target. In addition it’s important to recover to the guard position quickly to reduce the time for a counter.
We worked some single direct attacks these were:

• Jab
• Cross
• Hook (L&R)
• Uppercut (L&R)
• Overhand (L&R)

We also looked at the following combinations:
2 count combos

• Double Jab
• Jab Cross
• Cross Hook
• Hook Cross

As well as some 3 count combos

• Jab cross hook
• Jab cross uppercut
• Cross hook cross
• Hook cross hook

Lastly we did some technique work against the wide strikes (punches) as at a street level most people will swing wide rather then punch on a tight line.

We used the following techniques

• Shoulder stop
• Sumgab & foot trap (if these can land at the same excellent)
• Left head scoop
• Arm drag

Cheers all see you soon.

Guro Dan Inosanto Seminar - Edinburgh

Hi all,

Over the weekend of the 6th & 7th Feb 2010 I travelled to Edinburgh to participate in a weekend martial arts seminar taught by Guro Dan Inosanto.

With the added bonus of being the training partner for the weekend of my instructor Guro David Onuma.

Guro Inosanto is absolutely amazing & at every seminar of his I attend just shows what an amazing opportunity we have to be able to experience his enthusiasm, skill, knowledge & ability.

On day one we covered entries from various arts into close range to be able to get close enough to work a take down, we also went through some Jab & cross counters from Jun Gung Fu - Jeet Kune Do & finished with some ground striking drills from the guard on the focus pads.

On day 2 we covered double stick, single stick & some knife work from the Filipino martial arts.

The seminar was absolutely fantastic & a big thank you to the following people Guro Rick Young for hosting the seminar, Guro David Onuma for letting little old me be his training partner, Guro Bob Breen & his lovely wife Judy for being so friendly.

So until next time..... TRAIN SAFE, TRAIN HARD & HAVE FUN!!!!

See ya.
